Self-Funded and Non-Insured Patients

Dr. Christopher Love operates in the private health system and can offer services for those who wish to pay themselves.

Self Funding Your Surgery

Some people do not have Private Health Insurance, but still want their operations performed by specialist surgeons, like Dr. Love, who is Australia’s foremost surgeon for many specialised Urology procedures, such as:

  • Penile implant surgery
  • Penile straightening operations for Peyronie’s disease
  • MIST (minimally invasive surgical procedures) for enlarged prostates utilising both Prostatic Water Vapour Treatments and Prostatic Urethral Lift.
  • ATOMS slings for male incontinence

As Dr. Love no longer works in the public hospital sector, having done so for about 30 years, and, because most of the specialist operations he does are not readily available in that system anyway, Dr. Love can only operate on you in the private health system.

Yes, we are able to treat patients who wish to pay for their procedures themselves. We have negotiated with Holmesglen Private Hospital, our anaesthetists and the suppliers of the medical devices and prostheses to get the best deal we can for such patients.

An option for some people is to join a Private Health fund and wait the 12 months waiting period, as these conditions would be regarded as pre-existing conditions, and would not be eligible for private cover before the 12 months. But if you want quick access to Dr. Love’s expertise you can self-fund your procedure.

At the time of consultation we provide an exact quotation for the particular procedure, including all costs – hospital and operating theatre costs, assistant surgeon’s fees, anaesthetist’s fees, all equipment, devices and prosthesis fees, as well as Dr.Love’s fees.

The patient knows exactly what their out-of-pocket cost will be.

We are open to discussing payment terms, or patients could consider loan companies, like MacCredit, for specific loans for medical procedures, and patients are also able to access funds from their superannuation accounts to pay for medical care.

Dr. Love has a long pre-operative consultation with patients to discuss all aspects of management of their condition, and, for patients who then decide to go ahead and self-fund their procedure, we also absorb that consultation cost into the total cost of the procedure.

The total cost for a self-funded patient includes:

  • Pre-operative consultation with Dr Love and, for implant patients, the specialist Prosthesis Nurse
  • Procedure itself performed by Dr Love
  • Prosthesis or device used
  • Hospital charges for a standard stay
  • Medical fees for the surgical assistant and the anaesthetist
  • The post-operative visit
  • 24 hour a day telephone access to the specialist nurse
  • E-mail access to Dr. Love for further advice
  • Final visit at 3 months post-operatively, are also included

Although very uncommonly needed, costs for extended stays in hospital, treatment of other issues or complications that develop whilst in hospital or required admission to specialist units like ICU or CCU, cannot be included in the quotations given.
